Video – Why Skipping Breakfast Can Help You Age Well

Dr. Kathleen Perry:

So, is breakfast the most important meal of the day? Well, I’m here to tell you that I advocate skipping breakfast on occasion. In fact, I don’t have a problem if I find out that one of my patients or clients that I work with chooses to not eat breakfast ever. It’s called intermittent fasting, it means periodically going for periods of time where you don’t eat. And there are some amazing health benefits that have been studied. So, in truth, if you don’t eat for a 12 hour period, you are essentially fasting. That’s why it’s called breakfast – you are breaking your fast, that first meal of day that you have. So if you have dinner around 6PM, and you don’t eat anything afterwards, and the first meal of the day, your breakfast is at 6, 7, or later, you have essentially fasted for 12 or more hours. Now, I’d like you to consider skipping breakfast on occasion and see how you feel, see if it’s something you can do. By using intermittent fasting periodically, you will increase growth hormones, and lower your insulin levels and there are tons of other health benefits that have been studied as well. It can be a little uncomfortable if you’re not used to it, I exercise at about 9:00 in the morning when I play tennis, but often I get up at 4 or 5, so I’ve really had to sort of play with how intermittent fasting works for me. Sometimes it works better for me to skip dinner, and then have my first meal at 6 or 7 in the morning. If you have specific questions about how to incorporate intermittent fasting into your health routine, feel free to reach out to me through the website, and I’ll get back to you and answer your questions personally.
